MTV unveils 2023 nominations list in gender neutral categories


The MTV Movie and TV Awards ceremony 2023 is set to take place on May 8, 2023 as voting for fans opens on Monday, April 17, 2023.

“Television is our business, and everyone wants to see a winner. The MTV Movie & TV Awards is a household brand televised in over 170 countries, including Nigeria. The continuation of having gender-neutral categories is a key element that taps into today’s youth including how we want to see our brand evolve. The MMTAs never disappoint and promise to be exciting; plus the fans will get to see their favorite celebrities and influencers up close,” said Monde Twala, the Senior Vice-President and General Manager for Paramount Africa, and Lead for BET International.

MTV released the nominees for the 2023 awards across several gender-neutral categories including Best Performance in a Movie, Best Hero, Best Villain and Best Comedic Performance. New categories added in this year’s awards ceremony are Best Reality On-Screen Team and Best Kick-Ass Cast.

According to a statement from MTV, the top nominees in the 2023 awards and the number of nominations are Top Gun: Maverick (6), Stranger Things (6), The Last of Us (6), The White Lotus (4) and Wednesday (4) for scripted shows. For the unscripted shows, they are Jersey Shore Family Vacation (2), RuPaul’s Drag Race (2), The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (2) and Vanderpump Rules (2).

Several first-time nominees also made the list and they are Anna Torv, Austin Butler, Bad Bunny, Beatrice Grannò, Bella Ramsey, Cara Delevingne, Courteney Cox, David Dawson, Doja Cat, Emma D’Arcy, Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Jamie Campbell Bower, Jennifer Coolidge, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Joel Madden, Joseph Quinn, Justin Long, Keke Palmer, Madison Bailey, Maya Hawke, One Republic, Quinta Brunson, Rachel Sennott, Riley Keough, Rudy Pankow, Simona Tabasco and Sosie Bacon.

The awards ceremony will be hosted by Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore in Los Angeles, California; and will air in more than 170 countries globally.

Other top movies and films that made the nominations list include Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, M3GAN, Stranger Things, and The Kardashians. Several other actors and musicians also got nominations in various categories including best song, best kick-ass cast, best duo, and best kiss among others.
