Police evacuate suspects as fire razes room at station

Several suspects being held at the Industrial Area police station had to be evacuated to safety following a Sunday morning fire at the facility.

The fire is said to have started at 11am and destroyed old files kept at an unused abolition block.

OCPD Nehemiah Lang said the blaze was quickly put out by the Nairobi County fire brigade who responded with two fire engines.

“The OCS was checking on suspects we have locked in our cell when he noticed smoke emanating from the unused toilet which is just next to the cell ” Mr Langat said.

The officer raised alarm as others joined in attempting to tame the fire.

Their efforts were futile as the fire quickly spread to old files.

This forced the officers to evacuate the suspects to safety due to the smoke and fear that the fire would spread.

The suspects remained under guard as firefighters quickly put off the fire.

“We suspect an electric fault but investigations will reveal more” said Mr Langat.
