Raila backs Eric Omondi’s ‘peaceful’ demonstrations, blasts police

Azimio leader Raila Odinga has jumped to the defence of comedian Eric Omondi who was recently arrested for demonstrating in town.

In his speech following a prayer rally at the Jevanjee grounds in Nairobi on February 23, 2023, Odinga instead blamed the government for arresting the comedian and his fellow youths for carrying out what he described as a peaceful demonstration.

“Omondi and his team were just having a peaceful demonstration over the high cost of life,” he noted.

Odinga asked President William Ruto’s administration to allow Kenyans demonstrate as it was their democratic right.

“These people should be taught that people have a right to demonstrate. Peaceful demonstrations are held in the United Kingdom. The issue of police lobbing teargas canisters to disperse those demonstrating should end,” said Odinga.

This came a day after Omondi and a group of youths were arrested for demonstrating outside Parliament buildings. The group, all of whom were topless, were protesting the high cost of living in the country.

The youths, who were demonstrating outside Parliament, demanded an audience with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula.

They attempted to gain entry into Parliament Buildings after the National Assembly Speaker took too long to come out and address them.

The police lobbed teargas canisters to disperse the rowdy youths after struggling to force their way into Parliament Buildings.

The police engaged the youth in running battles before they were rounded up.

Omondi and his counterparts were locked up overnight.

They were presented before Milimani courts on February 23, 2023, charged with picketing without due clearance and released on Sh10,000 bond each.
