Schools to close before presidential elections
Primary and secondary schools will close early to accommodate the presidential election of October 26, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has said.
In a statement, Dr Matiang’i attributed the changes to the adjustment of the poll date.
Primary schools will close on October 25 to pave way for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to use the institutions as polling centres. Secondary schools will close a day earlier on October 24.
SCHOOL CALENDAR
Following the announcement by the IEBC that the fresh poll will be held on October 26, Dr Matiang’i said the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Home Science exam set to begin on that day will be pushed to October 30.
The third term, which also happens to be the shortest term in the school calendar, was supposed to run for nine weeks.
Schools opened on August 28 and were to close on October 27. The duration will now be seven weeks.
The CS asked school heads to ensure the coursework is cleared before the closing date.
KCSE exams will run from November 6 to 30. KCPE dates have not, however, been affected and will run as scheduled from October 30 to November 3.
