Sonko: Not being strict with my daughters led to early pregnancies
Parents should not stop parenting their children, even after they reach the age of 18 years, since allowing them to do whatever they want might lead to dire consequences. This is according to former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
Sonko has at the same lamented how in the past he has differed with his wife on this issue to a point he gave up, with the outcome being his daughters getting pregnant while very young. Regardless, he said, he does not regret being a grandfather.

“Our children mat be well-behaved while we are with them at home, in church and during vacation. (But) we don’t know what they’re are doing out there in school and campus. For this reason and in my opinion, I can now see why the government came up with a proposal of abolishing boarding schools,” Sonko said.
“It’s our responsibility to be checking on and monitoring our children frequently wherever they are. This idea of children who have attained the age of 18 saying they are grown up and mature is not a good one. I have personally differed with my own wife on several occasions over this until I gave up and the lesson we got my two daughters I had a lot of hope in, got early pregnancies which eventually made me one of the youngest proud grandfathers in the country with four grandchildren, two from each daughter,” he said.

This he says served as a lesson and he and his wife continue to parent their children despite them being adults.
“We learned several lessons and we are still parenting our children even when they are adults and we still have much hope in them and their siblings (including the adopted ones) behind them whom we are doing our best to educate and raise. But mjue hii lesson ya mtoto umleavyo ndivyo akuavyo is real and at some point, its good for parents to be strict and monitor every activity our children (whether above 18 or below) are doing while away coz we sacrifice a lot to raise them,” he said.
