Wanyama delays Kenyan trip to wait for move to Spurs

Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama has delayed his trip to link up with the national football team on Monday in anticipation of completing a transfer from Southampton to Tottenham Hotspurs.

The anticipated transfer has been met with stiff opposition by Southampton.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman omitted Wanyama from the squad that beat Norwich City 3-0 at St Mary’s on Sunday afternoon, after the Kenyan said that he was not in the right frame of mind to play.

Koeman made it clear that if Wanyama reapplied himself, he could earn a bigger move than one to Tottenham next summer, when he would have only one year to run on his contract.

Koemen has told Wanyama he is “playing with his career” after the player went on a strike in a bid to force the move to Tottenham.

Normally, Wanyama flies to Kenya immediately after his last club assignment and arrives a day or two early to spend time with his family before joining the Harambee Stars camp.

That has not been the case this time, Nairobi News can reveal, and the player is not expected in Nairobi until Wednesday morning at the earliest.

This implies that the player and his advisors are anticipating a late deal to go through, before Tuesday’s afternoon’s deadline, and are on standby for the modalities of a medical, paperwork and contract signing.
