Award-winning Mau Mau love story film ‘Wamaitha’ begins screening in Nairobi
A new Mau Mau love-themed film titled Wamaitha begins screening this weekend at Eugenia Park, Nairobi.
Set against the backdrop of the Mau Mau rebellion, Wamaitha also tells the hidden stories of women fighters who bravely made their mark in history. The historical action drama directed by Kang’ethe Mungai is available in Kikuyu and English.
Mr Mungai says the film which was inspired by the Mau Mau rebellion, is a dedication to the Kenyan patriots who sacrificed their lives for Kenya to gain its independence.
“By showcasing such narratives, we honor our history and inspire future generations.”
The movie also highlights the crucial role played by women during the struggle for independence.” he says.
It stars Njambi Mburu, who plays the lead role of Wamaitha, Morris Mwangi as Kung’u, and Abigail Wanjira as Ng’endo, among others.
Ahead of the screening, the film’s producer Tash Mitambo has called on Kenyans to come out in large numbers during the two-day screening, which begins this Saturday, to show support for the local production.
“When we support films like Wamaitha, we are investing in our own stories told by our people. This support creates jobs for actors, directors, and crew members while stimulating the economy through increased local production,” Mitambo said.
Mr Mungai also emphasized the need for local storytelling telling our stories in our way.
“When we support local productions, we are not just watching a film, we are witnessing the heart and soul of our nation.”
The film was recently nominated at the Zanzibar International Film Festival.
It also won Best Foreign Language Feature at the Indian Independent Film Festival and Best Indie Feature at the New York International Film Awards.
