Bungle la Mwanachi leader arrested while enroute to Nation Centre for interview
The self proclaimed Bunge la Mwananchi president Calvince Okoth aka Gaucho has been arrested.
Nairobi News understands the vocal grassroots politician was arrested in connection with his speech at the contentious Jubilee Party National Delegates Conference in Nairobi on May 22, 2023.
Speaking exclusively to Nairobi News, former Bunge la Mwananchi president John Mark Ababu appeared to confirm the arrest.
“Yes, Gaucho has been arrested. I don’t know where he is being held currently,” Ababu told Nairobi News.
Incidentally, the vocal politician was arrested hours after confirming an interview with Nairobi News.
He was reportedly on his way to Nation Centre for the interview but when Nairobi News contacted him, his phone was switched-off.
Gaucho, who has been instrumental in championing the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya protests in Nairobi aimed at lowering the cost of living, has in the recent past been criticized by Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.
It is said the aspiring politician made some sensitive comments touching on nominated lawmaker Sabina Chege.
He also appeared to criticise Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.
He has also repeatedly addressed Azimio la Umoja One Kenya leader Raila Odinga as his political godfather.
“You know Mr Odinga is like my father,” Gaucho said in one of the interviews with this website.
At the Jublilee event, former president Uhuru Kenyatta supported Gaucho and promised to buy him lunch for supporting him in the ‘fight’ for the ownership of Jubilee party.
“Even you Gaucho the next time we meet, I will buy you lunch, don’t worry. You came to defend the party’s property,” Uhuru said.
This is not the first time Gaucho has been arrested.
On March 25, 2023, he was aongside one Nuru Okanga, reportedly nabbed by officers in a sting operation.
The duo is known for mobilising Azimio supporters.
His anti-government comments have made him become common and known in Kenya.
