Film creatives to receive copyright training in the digital age at Kalasha

The Kenya Film Commission has announced a valued partnership with the Copyright Tribunal for the upcoming Kalasha International Film and TV Festival and Market.

Scheduled to take place from March 27-29, 2024 at the Kenya International Conference Centre in Nairobi, this collaboration marks a pivotal moment for the country’s creative landscape.

At the heart of this partnership is the launch of the Copyright Law Clinic, tailored to provide invaluable insight and guidance on copyright law to creatives working in the film and television sector.

These sessions will offer personalised interaction with the Chairman and Members of the Tribunal, ensuring a tailored learning experience. In addition, intellectual property lawyers who volunteer their time to the Copyright Tribunal will be on hand to offer their expertise and support to attendees.

Timothy Owase, CEO of the Kenya Film Commission, said: “We are delighted to partner with the Copyright Tribunal to facilitate this unique learning opportunity for creatives on copyright law and protection. This initiative underscores our commitment to nurturing and empowering the Kenyan film and television industry”.

As a further demonstration of its commitment to nurturing talent, the Copyright Tribunal will sponsor an award for the best student film at the 13th Kalasha Awards ceremony on 30 March.

This gesture underscores the critical importance of nurturing emerging talent within the industry.

Liz Lenjo, Chairperson of the Copyright Tribunal, commented on the partnership: “We are honoured to be part of the Kalasha International Film and TV Festival and Market and to help celebrate excellence in filmmaking. We look forward to engaging with participants and celebrating the achievements of Kenya’s vibrant creative community.”
