Nandi Senator Kiprotich Cherargei has announced that he will support Fafi MP Salah Yakub’s proposal to remove term limits if the bill is brought to the Senate.

Cherargei, who was elected on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket is a close ally of President William Ruto.

“UDA is an epitome of democracy & rule of law. Hon. Salah Yakub is within his right to push this amendment let’s listen first, I shall support in the senate. This is a conversation that might happen in future by Kenyans on scrapping of term limit of a President. Kazi ni kazi,” Cherargei tweeted.

As reported by the Nation, the Fafi lawmaker has also proposed the removal of presidential term limits from the Kenyan constitution, arguing the cap should be based on age and not the period of service.

However, Yakub’s sentiments has divided opinion among his political colleagues, with UDA chairman Johnson Muthama distancing the party from Yakub’s opinion.

“The statement by Fafi MP, Hon. Salah Yakub on scrapping the presidential term limit and capping it on the age limit has made many Kenyans get concerned and many have called me asking about the position of @UDAKenya. As the National Party Chairman I wish. to categorically state that Hon. Yakub’s made a personal statement that has nothing to do with @UDAKenya. As a Party, we stand for open Democracy and we remain supportive of the two-term presidential limit and no ongoing discussions to scrap it,” Muthama said.

In the event that such a bill is passed, Dr Ruto, 55, will have the leeway to seek re-election for up to four terms, 2027, 2032, 2037.
