Indian couple who died in fire ahead of wedding trip to Kenya to be buried today


The couple who died in a fire just before their planned trip from India to Kenya for their wedding will be laid to rest today at Ramoar village in Bhuj, Gujarat.

Kenyan national Rupal Kanji Dhanji, 25 and Kishan Premji Halai, 28, were to get married in Kenya but their journey was delayed and the airline they were to use in travelling booked them a room at Hotel Galaxy in Prabhat Colony at Santacruz.

Tragically the couple and businessman by the name Kantilal Gordhan Vara, 48, perished in the fire at the hotel. The couple, who were originally from Gujarat, had gone to India to attend a wedding ceremony.

An autopsy is yet to be conducted on the body of Mr Vara as the Indian authorities are waiting for members of his family to arrive in Mumbai.

Meanwhile, Indian Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar, has said preliminary investigations into into the incident have shown that the hotel management had not complied with safety measures even after being asked to do so.

“We have made the decision to disconnect water and electricity at the hotel and this will not be restored until they comply with the regulations,” said Ravindra.

Ravindra revealed that the hotel’s license was about to be cancelled but a decision was made that they be issued with a notice which asked them to adhere to the fire safety measures.

The fire department revealed that even after the Santacruz-based hotel was issued with a notice, no action was taken in nine months.

The management was also being questioned on what took them to long before they could adjust as advised.
