Is there an age limit for applying for the Green Card or Diversity Immigrant Visa?

Every year, the United States of America’s Citizenship and Immigration Services avails 50,000 visas to be randomly awarded to applicants seeking permanent citizenship using a lottery system.

One can apply for this Green Card in three categories: the Green Card for employment-based immigrants, the Green Card for family preference immigrants, and the Green Card for an immediate relative of a US citizen.

To apply for a Green Card, one must be eligible in one of the three aforementioned categories.

To apply for a card as an immediate relative of a US citizen, an applicant qualifies if they are the spouse of a US citizen, is the unmarried child under the age of 21 of a US citizen and is the parent of a US citizen who is at least 21 years old.

To apply under the family-based preference, an applicant qualifies if they are the unmarried child of a US citizen and is 21 years old or older, is a married child of a US citizen, is a sibling of a US citizen who is at least 21 years old, is a family member of a lawful permanent resident and this will mean that the applicant is either a spouse of a lawful permanent resident, is an unmarried child under the age of 21 of a lawful permanent resident or is the unmarried child of a lawful permanent resident 21 years old or older.

While no age limit has been placed on applying for a Green Card for employment-based immigrants, the requirements to meet the application qualifications lockout younger people.

Among some of the qualifications listed for this category include an applicant being: an outstanding professor or researcher, a multinational manager or executive who meets certain criteria, a member of a profession that requires an advanced degree or has exceptional ability in the sciences, arts, or business.

Additionally, applicants in this category should be skilled workers with a minimum of two years of work experience or training, is a professional or could be unskilled – meaning they will perform unskilled labor requiring less than 2 years of training or experience.
