KNCCI polls: Moses Wetangula backs Richard Ngatia’s re-election bid

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has appeared to back Richard Ngatia’s re-election as the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) presidency ahead of the polls in June 2023.

Mr Ngatia who will be facing off against Eric Rutto in the polls, met Wetangula in Nairobi on May 10, 2023.

Nairobi News understands the discussions between the two leaders focused on parliamentary joint Committee to steer programmes and formulation of policies that are friendly for traders and businesses.

“We want Kenyans to do business among each and other and with other countries. Please let us know how we can help you in achieving this,” said Wetagula.

Wetangula further threw his support behind John Shimaka in his bid to win the KNCCI National Director for Western Region seat.

“As a group, we are honoured to receive this endorsement and appreciate your recognition of our efforts. We will continue to work diligently to support our region and promote its growth and development,” he said.

During the courtesy call, Ngatia and Shariff were accompanied by the Chamber’s regional leaders including, Shimaka, Sylvanus Abungu (Chairman of Busia Chapter), Billy Nyonze (Chairman of Vihiga Chapter), Charles Omutany (Vice Chairman of Kakamega Chapter), Martin Waliaula, (Chairman of Trans Nzoia Chapter) and Peter Juma ( Director of Kakamega Chapter).

Thanks to his grassroot support from across the country, Mr Ngatia, who is seeking a second term, has emerged as a front-runner in the race amid suggestions Mr Rutto could be implored to step down before the polling day.

Mr Ngatia has spearheaded efforts to expand opportunities for Kenya’s goods and services.

He was instrumental in a partnership deal signed with the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) aimed at supporting businesses in Kenya in October 2022.

The deal was signed by Mr Ngatia and her French counterpart Ms. Estelle Gillot.

As part of the agreement, FCCI and KNCC will work towards expanding trade and investment opportunities through the support of Business Incubators, Digital technology, apprenticeship, SMEs programs, benchmarking, exhibitions, and events with the Kenyan business industry.

Kenya has embarked on an aggressive campaign to open more market opportunities abroad and deepen trade ties with traditional allies.
