Man survives attempted suicide after jumping from building’s 6th floor


A 42-year-old man is fighting for his life at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) after he attempted suicide by jumping from the 6th floor of a building in Akila estate, Embakasi area.

The man, according to neigbours and the police, had an altercation with his wife before locking the doors and setting the house on fire. Neighbours who saw smoke coming from the house rushed to try and rescue the couple.

Police said that they received reports of a fire incident but by the time they got to the scene, neighbours and good Samaritans had already put out the fire.

But the man who had already sustained burns, overpowered those who had come to rescue them and jumped off the building. He survived the fall with serious injuries.

“During the incident, it was established that the 42-year-old man wanted to commit suicide and when members of the public rescued them from the fire where they had sustained serious burn injuries, he overpowered them and then jumped over from 6th floor to the ground and sustained serious injuries,” police said in a statement.

The man was rushed to KNH in critical condition, while his wife, 38, was taken to Shalom Hospital, Athi River in fair condition.

Property of unknown value was destroyed during the incident. Police have launched investigations into the incident.

In Mwiki area, Nairobi, a 38-year-old man died on Tuesday evening after he was hit by a stone in a quarry where he was working.

John Gitau was in the company of 10 other men working deep in the quarry excavating building stones when a huge stone caved in on him.

The workers said the deceased was in a section of the quarry alone when tragedy struck.

His colleagues only realize that he was missing as they left the site late in the evening.

The workers said they went back to the site and found the man’s lifeless body at the scene from where they retrieved it. The body was later moved to the mortuary.
