Man threatens to detonate gas cylinder during dramatic arrest in Umoja
Police in Umoja slums within Nairobi County on the night of Tuesday, August 15, 2023, shot and arrested a murder suspect who has been on the run.
It all started when the suspect confronted police officers while armed with a gas cylinder and matchbox, which he wanted to go ahead and detonate.
However, he was shot in the leg and then arrested with sleuths attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Nairobi County police commander Adamson Bungei said the suspect has been committing various crimes within the city.
“He is wanted in Dandora police and other police stations for several crimes that he has committed in the city. Police managed to nab the suspect after he was shot in the leg as he tried to denote the gas cylinder,” Mr Bungei said.

Police said that the suspect, in August 2021, shot and murdered a civilian identified as Kelvin Kairu in the Donholm area.
During the incident, two senior police officers were injured and taken to hospital. The suspect as well is in hospital.
Police are awaiting his recovery before questioning and subsequently transferring him to jail.
The incident comes just hours after detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested a main suspect concerning the killing of their fellow officer, Mr David Mayaka.
The suspect, Alex Wanjiru, was captured by investigators from the Crime Research unit in Rugithingi, Kiambu County. He had been hiding there after the incident.
Police said that they are still in pursuit of two others who are still in hiding and are linked to the murder of the officer.
Meanwhile, police in the Ngong area are investigating an incident where a man was allegedly shot in the leg in a suspected robbery incident.
The victim was waiting at the gate for it to be opened when two gunmen approached him and shot the man in the leg before stealing from him.
