Matiang’i released ahead of court date
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Dr. Fred Matiang’i was on March 7, 2023, released from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters after a day-long of grilling by detectives.
The former powerful CS was released after spending the day at the Kiambu road-based DCI headquarters with his lawyers.
He was grilled in relation to a police raid at his Nairobi home three weeks ago.
Police maintain they never raided his home at the time and accuse him of spreading false information meant to ‘spread tension in the country’.
Matiang’i was reportedly released on condition he will avail himself in the event he is required in the near future.
Nairobi News earlier reported that the DCI intends to charge Matiang’i for claiming policemen raided his home on February 9, 2023.
His release follows a day of high drama at the DCI headquarters which began with Matiang’i temporarily barred from accessing its offices despite the summons until ‘all his lawyers are registered’
Later, Azimio leader Raila Odinga was also barred from accessing the DCI headquarters when he went to visit him.
This caused a confrontation between the veteran politician and the police manning the gates and at some point Mr Odinga threatened to storm the offices.
“This is a public office and I do not understand why you do not want me to see the director. Do you want me to tell these people to storm this office?” threatened Raila.
Matiang’i has been at loggerheads with the government since President William Ruto assumed office.
The DCI has separately written to the Head of Public Service requesting for information on his wealth declaration forms since he joined Cabinet in 2013.
The Ethics and Anti Corruption Commision (EACC) are also said to be investigating some of his dealings while at the helm of the Ministry of Interior and Education.
