Men’s Conference chairman Stephen Letoo comments on Eric Omondi’s arrest

Stephen Letoo, the newly elected Men’s Conference chairperson, has broken his silence on protests over high costs of living.

The protests were led by comedian Eric Omondi in Nairobi on February 21, 2023.

Letoo, also a media personality, described the move by Omondi and his colleagues as ‘courageous’.

“Men are protesting outside Parliament over high taxes and cost of living,” Letoo wrote on his verified Facebook account.

Letoo was recently elected Men’s conference chairperson at a gathering attended by men from around the country in Nairobi on Valentine’s Day.

Omondi, the self-declared President of Comedy in Africa, led a group of men demonstrating along parliament road demanding an audience by the National Assembly Speaker, Mr Moses Wetangula.

The masculine men, dressed in black shorts and did not have shirts or vests, chanted songs, clapped their hands and confronted police over the high cost of living.

They held placards with messages such as ‘High Costs of Living, Unga Juu Mafuta Juu and Stima Juu Taxi Juu’.

Before they were dispersed using teargas canisters by police officers, they blocked Parliament Road causing a traffic snarl-up.

The men also had chains on their neck, symbolizing how ‘Kenyans have been held hostage by the high costs of living’.

Majority Chief Whip, Silvanus Osoro, passed by but did not address their outcry.

Instead, the youthful lawmaker representing South Mugirango constituency urged the comedian to reach out to him through a phone call.

Eric Omondi was later arrested and arraigned in court for causing disturbance.
