Mwihoko residents raise concerns over insecurity in the area

Residents of Mwihoko in Ruiru Sub-County, Kiambu, are raising concerns over rising insecurity in the estate.

The residents say that in the last three months, they have experienced an upsurge in crime-related incidents where young armed men have been terrorizing them.

On Saturday, July 15, 2023, two armed men accosted a man while waiting for his wife to open the gate for him.

In a CCTV footage which is in our possession, the two men who were wearing caps asked the man who was standing right outside his gate to hand over his phone to them.

The men are seen brandishing pistols as they ransacked his pockets, intending to get any more valuable items he may be carrying.

He is even seen raising his hands as he pleads with the armed robbers not to harm him.

The incident occurred just a month after another similar incident, where armed robbers riding on a motorbike accosted a man as he stood outside his gate waiting for the family to open for him.

The man had just alighted from a matatu and was standing outside his gate when three robbers riding on a motorbike arrived and ordered him to hand over everything he had to them.

The incident was captured in CCTV footage and later shared on various social media platforms by locals.

Ms Margaret Wambui, a local, accused the police of sleeping on their jobs, saying that they should be patrolling the area daily.

“The officers here are sleeping on their jobs, we have a new police station that should be focused in ensuring that we are safe but this is not happening,” Ms Wambui said.

Another local, Kamau Njoroge, said that for years Mwihoko had been peaceful, but the moment an operational police station was set up in the area, things changed.

He said that the locals had expected security to be better because the police were now available, but that has never been the case.

“On Sunday night we heard loud gunshots. This has never been the norm in this area,” he said.
