One person died and 15 others sustained serious injuries when a “pimped” Nairobi bound Matatu rammed into a truck along the Thika Superhighway near Ruiru town on Thursday evening.

Area OCPD Isaac Thuranira said that the driver of the ISSKA mini bus, christened ‘Maddcity’, was overtaking another vehicle when he lost control and rammed into a lorry that was moving in the same direction.

The vehicle was heavily “pimped” with graffiti on the outside and an interior with multiple screens. It was famed for playing loud music.

TRAFFIC SNARL UP

Last year, President Uhuru Kenyatta directed the National Transport and Safety Authority to allow matatus to design grafittis on the exterior in what many saw a return of matatus madness.

The accident caused a major traffic snarl up on the busy highway with vehicles having to be diverted on the service lane to facilitate flow of traffic.

The OCPD said that out of the 15 injured 5 were very critical and were rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital while the rest were taken to Ruiru and Thika Hospitals respectively.

The lorry was ferrying building stones to Ruiru by-pass. The wreckage remains of the mini bus were towed to Ruiru Police Station and the body taken to Kenyatta University Mortuary.
