Parents to pay Sh5 daily for Sakaja’s ‘Dishi na County’ programme

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s initiative to implement a school feeding program in impoverished urban areas commenced with the establishment of innovative kitchens.

It has now been disclosed that parents will be required to make a modest payment of just Sh5 per day to support the provision of nourishing meals for their children.

“Parents will only pay Sh5 and in return, children will get 6500 grams of nutritious food and a fruit every day,” the Governor announced on Monday when he presided over the groundbreaking ceremony at Njiru Primary School in Embakasi East Constituency.

On Monday, the Governor sent his County Executive Committee (CEC) members to preside over the groundbreaking ceremony of nine kitchens.

In his speech, the Governor said the programme is expected to create 2,000 jobs for the residents.

“This programme will create two thousand jobs in Nairobi. This kitchen is more than food. It represents hope, it represents a solid foundation for this generation of Nairobi,” said the Governor.

In his speech, the Governor urged the students to focus on their studies as his administration will take care of them through the programme.

He was joined at Njiru by his Urban Planning CEC Stephen Gathuita Mwangi, among other CECs and a number of MCAs.

Finance CEC Charles Kerich oversaw the ceremony at Kwa Njenga Primary School, Mobility and Works CEC Patrick Mbogo was at Kayole 1 Primary School while District CEC Ibrahim Auma was at Baba Dogo Primary School.

The same exercise took place at Toi Primary (Business and Traders CEC Waziri Rosemary), Muthangari Primary (Environment CEC Maureen Njeri), Farasi Lane Primary (ICT CEC Michael Gumo) and the ceremony at Racecourse Primary was led by Health CEC Anastasia Nyalita.

In his address to the Nairobi County Assembly last year, the Governor said his plan was to reach out to public schools where some children have dropped out of school due to lack of food.
School feeding was one of the promises he made during last year’s election campaigns.

In the proposed Sh40 billion county budget for the 2023/2024 financial year, the county has allocated Sh9.95 billion for the school feeding programme.
