Rwandan musician Bruce Melodie sets new milestone

Rwanda’s vibrant music scene witnessed a historic moment on October 21, 2023, as Bruce Melodie, a household name in the country’s music industry, clinched the prestigious Trace Award for “Best Rwandan Artiste.”

This victory makes him the first Rwandan artiste to ever receive this honor.

But the evening was more than just a winning moment. Bruce Melodie turned his award acceptance into an unforgettable performance, seamlessly blending technology and music. In a groundbreaking move, he collaborated with Jamaican-American reggae rapper Shaggy, who virtually joined the act.

Their performance was a delightful fusion of talent, as they presented the audience with a remix of Bruce Melodie’s chart-topping single, “Funga Macho,” renamed “When She’s Around” for the occasion. Fans eagerly await the official release of this electrifying track on October 27.

Bruce Melodie, overwhelmed by his achievement, took to his social media platforms to express his gratitude and enthusiasm. He recognized the broader significance of his victory, saying, “Celebrating a victory that resonates far beyond myself. This award is a tribute to the vibrant spirit of Rwandan and African music. Special thanks to Trace Awards, the Government of Rwanda, and everyone who played a part in this incredible journey.”

The accolades continued to pour in, and Bruce Melodie received praise from none other than Nigerian music sensation, Mr. Eazi. Mr. Eazi himself was honored with the “Change Maker” award at the Trace Awards and used his platform to acknowledge and applaud fellow artists, including Bruce Melodie, for their contributions to the music industry.

Mr. Eazi stated, “I want to thank Trace, the Government of Rwanda, I want to thank people like 2baba, D’banj, Bruce Melodie, and everyone who has been motivating change. I’m going to leave by saying, ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’.”

Bruce Melodie has undoubtedly established himself as a leading figure in Rwanda’s contemporary music scene. His music videos have consistently garnered millions of views, and he boasts an impressive following of over 200,000 monthly listeners on various music streaming platforms.
