Sakaja increases fees for alcohol and market licences
Alcohol traders in Nairobi are bracing themselves for increased operation costs after the County government revised the fee for operating outlets upwards.
As per the Finance Act 2023, the traders will not have to pay increased licensed fees by up to 75%.
Section 25 of the Nairobi City County Alcoholic Drinks Control and Licensing Act, 2014 has been amended, revising the charges for general retail alcoholic drinks.
This means that getting a general retail alcoholic drinks license in respect of premises situated within the county will cost Sh100, 000 from the initial Sh25,000 per year.
General retail alcoholic drinks license (off license) in respect of premises situated within the County has also been increased four times from the initial Sh12,000 to Sh50,000 per year.
Also, the county alcoholic board will prepare and submit to the Governor and the County Assembly an annual report of its activities including details of expenditures, and furnish such additional information as may be deemed sufficient and necessary by the Governor, the County Assembly, or by the Controller and Auditor General.
The county boss has also introduced new fees for vendors at the city parks.
The annual clearance certificate of vendors will go for Sh4, 000, and trading license of vendors will cost Sh5, 000.
Using the parks by organized groups of less than 100 people will cost Sh5, 000 while more than 100 organized groups will cost Sh10, 000.
The county has also revised the daily market access fee from Sh20 to Sh50, a move that recently received criticism from traders in various markets within the county.
For instance, at City Market, owning a larger stall will cost Sh13,750 from the initial Sh12,500, and the price of other stalls has been increased upwards.
At jericho Market, getting a space in a workers shop 348 will cost Sh5, 000, which is a new fee after being free for years, and operating a hotel or butcher within the same market will cost Sh1, 500.
Also, running a butchery or hotel in Kibera Market is no longer free after the county introduced Sh1, 500 fee.
