Tusker inch closer to Kenyan Premier League title

Tusker are 90 minutes away from being confirmed league champions for the first time in four years after they edged out battling Sony Sugar 1-0 at the Awendo Green Stadium on Saturday.

Wide man Noah Wafula struck the all-important goal in the 32nd minute to hand his side three points after Sony Sugar had squandered a penalty in the fifth minute through Amos Asembeka.

Shafik Batambuze was adjudged to have infringed Masud Juma in the box but Asembeka failed to take advantage from the spot.

The win took Tusker’s points tally to 55, opening up a seven-point gap between them and the chasing Gor Mahia, who will play Mathare United on Sunday at the Safaricom Stadium, Kasarani.

With the win Tusker could be confirmed champions next weekend in the event that they beat the free-falling AFC Leopards on Sunday at the Afraha Stadium in Nakuru.

Such an outcome would see the brewers declared champions on 58 points regardless of how Gor Mahia performs in the remaining matches. Gor and Tusker will clash in the last match on the season.

Sony dominated with the lion’s share of possession but could not make it count missing chances in either side of halftime.

At the Kasarani Stadium, visiting Bandari shocked Posts Rangers 1-0 with Abdulatif Omar striking in the 85th minute to guarantee the win.

Across town at the Ruaraka grounds, it was an afternoon of disappointment for relegation threatened Ushuru who fluffed chance after chance to settle for a barren draw with Muhoroni Youth.

At the Kisumu County Stadium, Kennedy Otieno “Agogo” scored at the death as Western Stima and Chemelil Sugar shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

David Ojuang put the sugar millers ahead at the half-hour mark but Stima’s resilience paid off with the last attack of the game.
