Ushuru came from a goal down to beat Mathare United 3-1 in a Kenyan Premier League match at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, a result that prompted the latter’s coach Stanley Okumbi to threaten quitting his job.

This was Mathare’s second loss on the bounce coming in the wake of a 2-0 defeat to Nairobi City Stars last weekend at the same venue.

“I’m giving my best as a coach, maybe the players can do well under a different coach. I’m taking a break,” Okumbi said shortly after the match.

However, his boss, Bob Munro, who followed the match from the VIP stand maintained that Okumbi would continue in his role at the club.

“Okumbi is still the head coach until the end the season. I haven’t made any decision to the contrary and he will continue to serve as such,” Munro said.

DROPPED POINTS

Mathare took a 46th minute lead when Ismail Dunga finished Andrew Tololwa’s pass. However, Ken Kenyatta’s team drew level in the 53rd minute through Moses Arita before Nelson Marasowe settled the contest with a brace of goals.

Marasowe’s first goal came in the 73rd before he hammered the final nail in Mathare’s coffin deep in stoppage time.

In another match at the same venue, Tusker and KCB settled for a 1-1 draw in a highly competitive contest, while in Kisumu Chemelil Sugar and Sony Sugar fought to a barren draw.

KCB drew first blood when Chrispinus Onyango drilled in the ball in the 41st minute after being put through by Elly Asieche.

Tusker responded on the stroke of half-time with a bullet header from Joackins Atudo from Kevin Kimani’s corner.

“Those are two points dropped, we could have done better,” Tusker coach Francis Kimanzi said after the match.
