Well wishers reward Gor Mahia with millions after title win

Gor Mahia won its 20th Kenyan Premier League title on June 25, 2023, after beating City Stars 4-1 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

As a result, K’Ogalo, as Gor are commonly referred to in local football circles, will literally be swimming in cash, as politicians and well wishers scramble to award the players and technical bench.

Nairobi News understands he club sponsor SportPesa through Director of Communication Willis Ojwang’ has already announced that the team will receive Sh3.5 million bonus as ‘appreciation’. The cash will be handed over at a public event later this week.

“We will arrange and pick on a day this week because as sponsors, we celebrate this achievement and congratulate the team,” said Ojwang’

Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga who also serves as the club patron is expected to award the team with Sh1.5 million. Mr Odinga’s insiders indicated that he plans to host the team for a luncheon on June 27, 2023.

At the same time, ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo, an ardent Gor Mahia fan who has stood with the club through thick and thin, and has been aiding them financially, is expected also to reward the team handsomely when he hosts them for luncheon on June 26, 2023.

Owalo, hosted both the current team and K’Ogalo legends on May 12, 2023 where he gave a donation of Sh1 million.

Last week, he hosted Posta Rangers for a luncheon at Tin Tin restaurant where he gave them a Sh200,000 donation to boost their morale to beat Tusker who were Gor’s closest title challengers.

The morale boost paid off as Posta Rangers held Tusker to a 1-1 draw even though Gor lost to Kakamega Homeboyz 3-2.

Had Tusker beat the mailmen and won against Bullets in Mumias Sports Complex as they did, then the brewers would have won their 14th league title.

Also, Nairobi businessman Jared Otieno ‘Akuru Marachar’ is expected to host the team and hand a personal donation of Sh1.3 million he had promised the players when they were hunting for the league title.

Politicians, businessmen and other fans are also expected to reward the team for their success on the pitch and encourage them to do well in the next season’s Caf Champions League where they will represent the country.
