Why I resigned from KYPA – Babu Owino
Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino, made a bold statement on Monday, September 3, 2023, asserting that the Kenya Young Parliamentarian Association (KYPA) needs him more than he needs the association.
The outspoken MP, currently serving his second term in parliament, addressed recent developments surrounding his role within KYPA and dismissed media speculations.
In a statement issued by his office, Babu Owino addressed rumors and clarified his position within KYPA.
He took issue with certain media outlets that, according to him, had misrepresented facts regarding the association and his involvement with it.
“Some media houses should not misrepresent facts on matters KYPA. I resigned as the Secretary-General to give room for other new members of Parliament to serve so as to focus on other matters,” the statement read in part.

Mr Owino revealed that he had voluntarily stepped aside from his role as the Secretary-General of KYPA after holding a meeting with 15 members of the association.
He explained that his decision aimed to create opportunities for newer parliament members to assume leadership roles within the organization.
“I made the decision to step down and give a chance to other new MPs to serve in the positions,” he emphasised.
Mr. Owino also mentioned that two other prominent members of KYPA, Mr Mark Mwenje, the Embakasi West MP, who is now the Minority Whip in the National Assembly, and Ms Hezena Lemaletian, a nominated Senator, had similarly stepped down from their positions. He noted that Mr. Mwenje and Ms. Lemaletian had served in their roles for just one year.
However, Mr. Owino highlighted that he had served as the Secretary-General for an impressive five years, a testament to his dedication to the organization. He was elected to the position during his first term in office.
The legislator passionately defended KYPA’s role, asserting that the government should not overshadow the association. He emphasized that KYPA plays a vital role in safeguarding the interests of the youth in society, making it an essential component of Kenya’s political landscape.
