Exclusive: How Pakistanis defrauded Kenyan tycoon of Sh43m in fake Drake concert

Details of how Ms Rana Jamal a Kenyan tycoon lost Sh43million to suspected fraudsters based in Qatar who asked her to sponsor a music concert can now be revealed.

Nairobi News has gotten the details in a demand letter addressed to Doha-based Quantum Sports and Media World (QSM World) and its directors Dawood Khan (Chairman and CEO of QSM World/Abalena Capital Limited), Chief Operation Officer (COO) Hossama Dawood Khan, co-founder and chief executive officer Suleyman Dawood Khan, COO Mehreen Dawood Khan and Vice President Naeem Khan.

In the letter penned by United Kingdom (UK) based 5 TAN Law Chambers, Mr Pervaiz Akhtar, who runs a company called Jazba Entertainment, QSM World is accused of deceiving that they were in contract with musician Aubrey Drake Graham alias Drake and rapper Jacques Bermon Webster alias Travis Scott and requested for sponsorship to host the concert.

On March 23, 2021, QSM world reached out to Mr Akhtar informing them of an event dubbed “Rhythm: Drake and Travis Live” which was later shared to Ms Rana Jamal who runs Rani Jamal Production as an upcoming event which saw them agree to fund the event.

“It was on the basis of the express terms contained within this letter which affixed to the contract “Agreement of Co-operation” that was executed by Ranee Productions Limited and Quantum Sports and Media WLL that the induced Ranee Production Limited into entering the “Agreement of Co-operation” dated April 5, 2021,” the demand letter reads in part.

Seeing that the concert was a great deal, Ms Jamal agreed to fund part of the financial needs which were required and on April 21, 2021, she transferred Sh28 million to QSM World. This was later followed by a further Sh7 million which was sent to the Dubai-based company on May 5, 2021.

However, according to 5 TAN Law Chambers, QSM was so much aware that there was no such a deal and eventually the event never took place.

“As soon as our client discovered the true facts, they rescinded the contract on August 4, 2021, by normal and WhatsApp conference Call and Chat. The management of QSM made verbal promises that the funds would be returned to Ranee Productions Limited,” the demand letter further reads.

It is on this effect that Mr Akhtar, who played a major role in convincing Ms Jamal to fund the project, decided to visit Qatar and have word with the management of QSM.

On October 29, 2021, Mr Akhtar travelled to Qatar where he stayed for seven days and reached an agreement with the suspects that they would receive the money by mid December 2021. In December 2021, Mr Akhtar made another trip to Qatar with the aim of getting the money but this did not bear any fruits.

The demand letter states that Mr Akhtar also visited Doha on June 3, 2022 and July 4, 2022 but he was never given the money.

Currently, the defendants neither pick calls from Mr Akhtar nor from Ms Jamal.

“They also do not respond to emails and phone calls of the companies that sponsored the event,” the demand letter further reads.

Mr Akhtar and Ms Jamal now want the money they paid ahead of the concert be handed back to them within the next 14 days or else they take legal action.

Nairobi News contacted the management of QSM which neither responded to our calls nor responded to our messages.
