Mukuru, Maroon post wins in Sakaja Super Cup opener

Maroon FC and Mukuru Combined commenced their campaign in the Sakaja Super Cup on a winning note as the two-month tournament kicked off at the Police SACCO Stadium in Nairobi on October 1, 2023.

And in a related development, Mukuru’s Alphan Muthoka began his quest for the Golden Boot award by netting four goals to move to the top of the goal scorer’s chart.

Mukuru went on a rampag in their opening fixture, hammering Creative 6-2 in an entertaining ‘Slum Derby’ contest.

An own goal by Daudi Anami, coupled by four goals from Muthoka, an enterprising and fast paced attacker, alongside a well crafted strike by Dennis Aloo via a set-piece was enough for Mukuru to send a stern warning to their rivals in the tournament.

In between, Caleb Abuya and Isaac Mukobi provided consolation goals for Creative Hands.

Muthoka was gifted with the match ball by the tournament patron Johnson Sakaja, who doubles up as Nairobi Governor for scoring four times.

Football rules allow a player who scores three times or more to be handed the match ball.

In the other contest played at the same venue, Army side Maroon FC trounced South C United 3-0.

Eric Sifa turned the ball into his own net while trying to head away a Raymond Omondi curving shot in the 17th minute for Maroon’s opening goal.

Brian Omondi soared high to nod the ball home past South C goalkeeper Michael Omondi to double the scores in the 66th minute.

Kennedy Nderitu put the score beyond doubt after dribbling past Sifa to slot the ball into the net in an empty net with fiver minutes of regulation time remaining.

And in a curtain raising match, the Nairobi County Assembly Seargent at Arms Steve Mwangi bagged a brace to enable his team pip the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) 2-1.

Mwangi shot the county assembly into the lead in the 21st minute.

On resumption, Steve Ayoo levelled the scores for the journalists before Mwangi secured the win for City Hall based team from the spot.
