Policeman arrested after ‘robbing’ M-Pesa shop

There was drama in Ruiru, Kiambu County, after an armed robber took refuge in an Equity Bank branch to escape mob justice, only to be apprehended by police officers on patrol.

The suspect turned out to be an Inspector in the force, had robbed a customer of Sh54,000 at a nearby M-Pesa outlet at gunpoint.

“The suspect, who was armed with a pistol, had robbed an M-Pesa shop customer of Sh54,000 before an alarm was raised,” police said in a statement.

Responding to distress calls from the M-Pesa operator, members of the public pursued the suspected robber who drew his gun and shot in the air before he tried to force his way into the Equity Bank where he was arrested.

“The armed man came out of the shop shooting. He ran towards a bank where he was arrested by the guards and disarmed,” the report read.

He was then handed over to DCI Ruiru police station who had responded to the shooting.

The suspect believed to be a police officer was armed with a Glock pistol with 14 rounds of 9mm.

The police recovered Sh54,100 from the suspect.

Police did not immediately reveal the officer’s identity.

Last month, Detectives at the Kitengela Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested one of their colleagues who was found in possession of items stolen from a crime scene in Athi River, Machakos County.

According to Kitengela Police Station, Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) Athi River had requested assistance to process a death incident.

The Kitengela Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) is said to have assigned the matter to a Police Constable.

The said detective was questioned and was found with the laptop suspected to have been stolen during the crime scene investigation in his office.

On further questioning, the suspect led the officers to the iPhone, which he had already sold in Kitengela town to an unsuspecting buyer at a throwaway price.

The laptop and iPhone were recovered and preserved as evidence, an inventory was taken and both the laptop and iPhone were positively identified by the complainant.

The CSI officer was arrested and remanded, apparently intoxicated, pending formal charges.
