Raila opens Homa Bay Stadium as the one in his backyard remains incomplete

Azimio La Umoja – One Kenya Coalition leader Raila Odinga on Friday opened the 10,000-seater stadium in Homa Bay named after him even as a similar project in his Siaya County remains stalled.

Construction of the Sh369 million stadium in Homa Bay began in 2014, when former governor Cyprian Awiti presided over the groundbreaking ceremony.

However, back in Mr Odinga’s Siaya backyard, a stadium, whose construction began in 2013, is yet to be completed.

The construction of the 20,000-seater stadium was commissioned by the then governor Cornel Rasanga on October 30, 2018 and was part of the 2018/2019 Siaya County Integrated Development Programme.

The Siaya stadium, which sits on 19.9 acres of land, was estimated to cost Sh394 million and it had been estimated the construction would take 10 months to be completed, a dream that never came true.

While Governor James Orengo’s administration he committed himself to ensure the stadium construction is completed, Mr Odinga has not exerted efforts to expedite the stadium’s completion.

Just a few weeks ago, Orengo was in Nairobi to check on the progress of the manufacturing of the stadium’s roof. According to the county boss, the facility is supposed to be installed in the next month.

“Today I was at the Industrial Area in Nairobi to check on the progress of the manufacturing of the Siaya County ultra-modern Stadium roof that is supposed to be installed in the next 1 month,” Orengo said on Facebook.
