Why Mumias East MP Peter Salasya is celebrating Malala’s move to UDA

Mumias East lawmaker Peter Salasya has appeared to celebrate Cleophas Malala’s defection from the Amani National Congress (ANC) to United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Malala, a former Kakamega Senator, announced on February 27, 2022, that he had defected from ANC – a party associated with prime cabinet secretary Musalia Mudavadi, to President William Ruto’s UDA.

While appearing to encourage the move, Salaysa, a first-time lawmaker, argued, Malala’s exit gives room for his political outfit – namely DAP-Kenya – to thrive in Western Kenya.

“Congrats my brother Cleophas Malala for your new appointment as the SG of the ruling party. Thank you so much for saying bye to ANC Party. You are on the right track to ensure we have only one party in western Kenya which is DAP-Kenya led by my party leader Eugene Wamalwa,” wrote Salasya on his twitter page.

UDA announced the vocal Malala will replace Veronica Maina as the party secretary.

Maina is currently serving as a nominated senator.

Malala says his immediate focus will be to ensure the ruling party easily wins in the forthcoming election.

“We shall not go into 2027 before we organize ourselves better and this is a sign that President Ruto plans his politics under one colour,” Mr Malala said.

“One of my mandates is to begin a dialogue with our partners to ensure we have one party against our opponents. We cannot have one government and several colours, that is our position and we shall talk to others.”

Malala faces a tough task to actualize his ambition in his home turf as Western Kenya has always rallied behind Azimio leader Raila Odinga.
