Bling debate: Boniface Mwangi schools Sonko on how best to raise his children

Photojournalist-turned-activist Boniface Mwangi has offered his two cents on the debate about the authenticity of former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko’s jewelry.

Sonko has been engaging Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai in a war of words on whether or not his gold jewelry is authentic, to the extent he has even visited his jeweler to prove his point.

A video he shared on social media, shows Sonko engaging his jeweler in an effort to authenticate his necklaces, rings and bangles as well as to establish their total value.

Well, Sonko had his way after the jeweler inspected, tested, weighed and calculated the value of his bling.

“… I have tested my gold, its genuine. Total is 602 grams… minus the diamonds… you know diamonds are forever… total (value) is Sh7.2million… minus the diamonds,” Sonko says at the end of the video while facing the camera.

While he claimed to be a lesson to Alai, Mwangi felt Sonko was just seeking validation and attention from strangers.

“Parent(s) make or break their children’s confidence. Love your kids or they will waste the rest of their life looking for validation and affirmation from strangers,” Mwangi tweeted.

The debate over the authenticity of Sonko’s jewelry began when a tweep claimed that the former governor’s jewelry are valued at Sh2.6m.

Alai responded to this by saying: “Fake. Those things he wears are not even worth Sh 20,000. They are worth much less. Colour of gold but stuff are fake!”

An agitated Sonko then challenged Alai to get a jeweler of his choice for him to send in his bling for authentication.

“If they are fake, I will give you Sh2million you build a house at your rural home,” Sonko told the city MCA.
