6 reasons why Kenyans should encourage bi-yearly family clan meetings

Every once in a while, as is with an infamous family of Instagram influencers in Kenya, you hear cases of relatives finding themselves in romantic entangles. A cousin marrying a distant aunt or a brother looking at a woman sideways without knowing he is probably eyeing his sister from a relationship his father kept secret.

Sometimes, you might even find people conning each other without knowing they are blood relatives- a fact that might have saved the aggrieved party had this been known knowledge.

It is for these, among other reasons, that families should make it a tradition to have clan meetings at least twice a year so that everyone can get to know who is who and who their extended families are. Below are some of the benefits of hosting such clan events:

  1. Family meetings provide an opportunity for extended family members to come together, reconnect and strengthen their bonds. It allows relatives who may be scattered geographically to spend quality time with one another, share stories and foster a sense of unity and belonging.
  2. Bi-yearly family meetings create a platform for sharing updates and milestones among family members. It’s a chance to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, new jobs, and other significant events. This allows everyone to stay connected and engaged in each other’s lives.
  3. Family meetings provide a setting to pass down and preserve family traditions, values and cultural heritage. It allows older generations to share their wisdom, stories and cultural practices with younger family members, ensuring that important traditions are not lost over time.
  4. Large family meetings can facilitate open and honest communication, offering an opportunity to address any conflicts, misunderstandings or unresolved issues within the family. By creating a safe and supportive environment, family members can engage in productive discussions and work towards resolution or reconciliation.
  5.  Family meetings serve as a platform for making collective decisions on matters that affect the family as a whole. It could include discussions on family finances, property management, inheritance or organizing future events. This allows everyone to have a voice and ensures that decisions are made together and openly for accountability.
  6. Bi-yearly family meetings offer members a chance to create lasting memories and shared experiences. Through fun activities, outings or special events planned during the gatherings, families can create cherished memories that strengthen their bonds and provide a sense of belonging.
