LSK President asks DP Gachagua to stop bullying Governor Sakaja

The remarks made by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, directed to Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja, have triggered varying reactions from leaders and Kenyans.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Erick Theuri is the latest to criticize the DP for overstepping his roles.

Mr Theuri reminded the DP that the Constitution of Kenya separates functions and that the governor is not a subordinate to be bullied.

“Someone remind DP Gachagua that the Constitution separates functions. Governor is not a subordinate to be bullied,” Mr Theuri said.

He stated that the Governor only takes command from the Constitution and the law to discharge his functions.

“Sakaja should be allowed to run the city without threat or intimidation.”

Speaking from his hometown Nyeri on Monday, DP Gachagua criticized the governor for what he termed interference with matatu operations in Nairobi.

His remarks were related to Governor Sakaja’s move to relocate the long-distance matatus from the Nairobi CBD to the new Green PARK Terminus.

The DP alleged that the Kenya Kwanza Alliance campaigned for the governor to clinch the governorship seat in the concluded election. Hence, he should be guided by the same people.

According to DP Gachagua, he is the one who urged the Kikuyu residents in Nairobi to back governor Sakaja.

“I am the one who gathered the Kikuyu in Nairobi and told them to vote for him and I have called him for a meeting. Any matter that he decides on that can interfere with business matters in Nairobi, we must first sit down with him, discuss and agree,” Gachagua said.

A section of Nairobi County MCAs has also criticized his remarks.

Korokocho MCA Absolom Onyango asked the DP to concentrate on service delivery to Kenyans instead of fighting Governor Sakaja.

The relocation of matatus to the Green Park Terminus is still facing challenges after a section of matatu owners who were not pleased by the move went to court.
