Justina Wamae: Kylian Mbappe can’t be a GOAT with his World Cup loss attitude

By Winnie Mabel December 19th, 2022 2 min read

The world was treated to a nail-biting, edge-seating classic World Cup final on December 18, 2022, at the Lusail Stadium when Argentina and France – the defending champions- faced off in a game that ran for the first 90 minutes before being extended for another 30 minutes and finally ending in a penalty shootout.

The stars of the game were obviously Argentina’s Lionel Messi and France’s Kylian Mbappe. Both technically carried their teams on their backs as they matched one another in a 3-3 game that ended up being decided in a 4-2 penalty shootout that ended in Argentina’s favour.

Mbappe scored a hat trick at the match- 2 goals within 2 minutes- to keep keeping France in the game and a final one to even the score.

As fate would have it, Argentina won and Mbappe could not keep the disappointment out of his face. For a man who had fought tooth and nail to retain France’s glory as World Cup champions, Mbappe was one whistle away from breaking down in angry tears.

As the award ceremony began, Mbappe was often spotted alone, moody and sulky.

His teammates and coaches had no words of comfort for him. Despite not winning the World Cup, Mbappe won the Golden Boot for his playmaking and hat trick goals.

As he received the award, his entire body cut across as a man who would have rather been anywhere else on earth than receiving that trophy and being congratulated by France President Emmanuel Macron.

He also wouldn’t smile in the group photo of individual trophy winners and immediately walked away from the podium, leaving the Argentinian trophy winners posing for more photos, all in celebratory moods.

As the France team also received their medals, 23-year-old Mbappe continued sulking and wouldn’t celebrate his trophy or medals as the world watched- his supporters probably nursing heartbreaks as he did but in the privacy of their homes.

How could he when he had literally pulled the team out of the hole and positioned them for victory only to be disappointed by teammates who couldn’t shoot a good penalty?

Cue in Justina Wamae, a former deputy to 2022 presidential aspirant George Luchiri Wajackoyah, who chimed into the ongoing World Cup conversations and thoughts on Mbappe’s demeanour following their loss.

“If Mbappe was Kenyan, he would have been depressed in rural KE and not at the World Cup final. Ohh he can’t be the Greatest Of All Time with his attitude, where his lack of it gotten you? Mediocrity is our choice and seeing someone excel pains us. Vile tunamuangalia juu #INATUHUSU,” tweeted Wamae on December 19, 2022.
